Mathayom teamed up with Sequoia Grove Winery for a tasting party at Starfish Gourmet and Wines on September 20, and the resulting pairings were excellent, if we do say so ourselves.
Sequoia brought a Cabernet, a Chardonnay and a St. Francis Old Vines Zinfandel for sampling, and we did our thing, creating custom pairings to accompany the wines.
We marinated a London broil overnight in the Cab with a bunch of mustard and some sweet soy, honey and garlic and let it do its thing to tenderize the meat a bit. At the tasting, we seared the meat and served it up with some horseradish coleslaw, steamed brussel sprout salad, vine ripe tomato, and finally, some sautéed mushrooms and bleu cheese.
The Chardonnay was paired with jumbo lump crab cakes and dill lime crème fraiche over spinach. And for the Zin, we put together an Italian Panini with fresh sliced prosciutto, hot capicola and genoa salami, and pressed it all together with some Boursin cheese, braised leeks and sun-dried red peppers.
It was a fun little St. John event, and Sequoia Grove sold a bunch of bottles and we sold a bunch of food. Mission accomplished!
